Media to be Briefed on Exercise at 2 p.m. on Thursday, November 13
More than 600 federal, state and local emergency responders will participate in a massive emergency exercise at Port Newark on Saturday, November 15, 2003, to test their ability to handle a major crisis. Sponsored by the State of New Jersey and hosted by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the exercise is the culmination of three years of planning, and will be one of the most extensive ever held in New Jersey.
The exercise will simulate a terrorist-caused explosion in a cargo container and the release of hazardous materials on the port property. The Port of New York and New Jersey is the leading destination for international shippers on the East Coast, and the third largest port in the United States.
Among agencies participating in the exercise are the FBI; the federal Department of Homeland Security; the New Jersey State Police; the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey; the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office; the New Jersey Medical Examiner’s Office; the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection; the Newark and Elizabeth police and fire departments; the prosecutor’s offices in Union and Essex counties; the American Red Cross; and the Salvation Army.
Media interested in covering the exercise must report to Building 79 at Newark Liberty International Airport at 8:30 a.m. and present proper media credentials. At that location, media will be briefed on the day’s activities, and will then be transported by bus to the exercise site.
A conference call to brief media on the exercise will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, November 13. Media can participate by calling 888-380-9636, participant code 452858. Directions to Building 79
