About 10,000 feet of pavement on Runway 13-31 and related taxiways at LaGuardia Airport will be rehabilitated later this year. The construction project includes milling and repaving the runway and upgrading its electrical lighting system.
The Port Authority is working closely with the Federal Aviation Administration and airlines at LaGuardia Airport to coordinate this project. Runway closures will be scheduled during weekends and nighttime hours in order to minimize the impact on travelers and airport neighbors.
Aircraft flight patterns into and out of the airport may be adjusted during runway closure periods, but will resume their normal routes when the runway is open. The Port Authority also will continue to work closely with community and elected leaders to keep them informed about the project. Updates will be posted on the agency’s Website to keep the public apprised.
Port Authority Chairman Anthony R. Coscia said, “The Port Authority is committed to providing world-class facilities that adhere to the highest safety standards. With the rehabilitation of this runway, the Port Authority will ensure that LaGuardia Airport continues to function safely and smoothly.”
Port Authority Vice Chairman Charles A. Gargano said, “There are approximately 1,200 daily flights on average at LaGuardia Airport. Since airports are a 365-day-a-year business, it is vital that we make the necessary improvements for the good of our passengers, neighboring communities and people of this region.”
Port Authority Executive Director Kenneth J. Ringler, Jr. said, “As we did last year on a successful, similar project at Newark Liberty International Airport, we will conduct work on weekends and during nighttime hours when possible in an effort to minimize the impact on passengers and airport neighbors.”
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey operates many of the busiest and most important transportation links in the region. They include John F. Kennedy International, Newark Liberty International, LaGuardia and Teterboro airports; AirTrain JFK and AirTrain Newark; the George Washington Bridge; the Lincoln and Holland tunnels; the three bridges between Staten Island and New Jersey; the PATH (Port Authority Trans-Hudson) rapid-transit rail system; the Port Authority-Downtown Manhattan Heliport; Port Newark; the Elizabeth-Port Authority Marine Terminal; the Howland Hook Marine Terminal on Staten Island; the Brooklyn Piers/Red Hook Container Terminal; and the Port Authority Bus Terminal in midtown Manhattan. The agency also owns the 16-acre World Trade Center site in Lower Manhattan. The Port Authority is financially self-supporting and receives no tax revenue from either state.
