Press Release Number: 18-2001
Three new dedicated E-ZPass toll lanes will be added at the George Washington Bridge during the next two weeks to accommodate rising E-ZPass use at the world\'s busiest bridge.
Since E-ZPass was installed at Port Authority bridges and tunnels in 1997, its popularity among travelers has grown rapidly, and use is expected to continue to rise after the Port Authority\'s congestion pricing plan takes effect on March 25. In 1997, approximately 36 percent of all Port Authority customers used E-ZPass, and that number has risen to 59 percent today.
Ken Philmus, the Port Authority\'s Director of Tunnels, Bridges and Terminals, said, \"Our new toll structure will provide E-ZPass customers with a $1 discount during peak periods and a $2 discount during off-peak hours on the tolls they pay at the George Washington Bridge and at other Port Authority facilities. We expect this will encourage those who do not have E-ZPass to sign up for it, not only to save money but to save time on their commute.\"
The additional E-ZPass-Only lanes are on all three of the bridge\'s toll plazas. The newly dedicated E-ZPass lane on the lower level, Lane 68, will be open for E-ZPass-Only use from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday beginning Monday, February 19, and from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays beginning March 3. The lower level currently has three lanes dedicated to E-ZPass-Only at all times, and two additional toll lanes that are dedicated during certain days and times.
The newly dedicated lane at the Palisades Interstate Parkway toll plaza, Lane 42, will open for E-ZPass-Only use from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. on weekends beginning February 25, and from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. weekdays, beginning February 26. The Palisades Interstate Parkway toll plaza currently has four lanes dedicated to E-ZPass-Only use at all times.
Also beginning on February 25, at the main toll plaza, toll lane 10 will be open for E-ZPass-Only use from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Sundays.
Of the 31 toll lanes on the bridge, 16 will now be dedicated to E-ZPass-Only at all times or during certain days and times.
Currently, 76 percent of morning rush-hour customers use E-ZPass at the Palisades Interstate Parkway toll plaza; 69 percent of customers use E-ZPass at the lower level; and 66 percent use E-ZPass at the upper level.
