Date: Jul 20, 2005
Press Release Number: 85-2005

New York Governor George E. Pataki and New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg will join state and local officials at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 21, to break ground for a new ship-to-rail facility at the Howland Hook Marine Terminal on Staten Island.

The facility will re-establish freight rail service to Staten Island after a 15-year hiatus, and will allow the container terminal on Staten Island to transport containerized cargo on and off its property by rail for the first time.

Directions:
From Manhattan: Take the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway. Proceed to the Verrazano Bridge. After crossing the Verrazano Bridge, take the Staten Island Expressway to the Western Avenue exit (last exit before the Goethals Bridge). After getting off at that exit, follow the road to the stop sign. Make a right at the stop sign onto Western Avenue and proceed for about a mile to the visitor’s parking lot at the Port Authority Administration Building.

From New Jersey: Take the New Jersey Turnpike South to Exit 13, Goethals Bridge. After crossing the Goethals Bridge, take the first exit (Forest Avenue) and make a left. At the traffic light, make a left onto North Goethals Road. Proceed to the next stop sign. At the stop sign, turn right onto Western Avenue and proceed for about a mile to the parking lot at the Port Authority Administration Building.
