Press Release Article

Date: Sep 30, 2005
Press Release Number: 113-2005

Three of four upper-level lanes in each direction of the George Washington Bridge will be closed overnight for steel beam removal from 10 p.m. Friday, September 30, until 10 a.m. Saturday, October 1. This closure is in addition to previously announced closures scheduled to begin Saturday, October 1 at 10 p.m. The work is part of the bridge’s ongoing repainting project.

During construction hours, one lane in each direction will remain open to traffic. Traffic in that lane, however, will stop periodically for about 20 minutes at a time for movement of construction equipment and materials.

During construction hours, noncommercial vehicles should use the bridge’s lower level, which will be staffed for cash-paying customers. Commercial vehicles must continue to use the bridge’s upper level at all times.

All motorists also are strongly encouraged to use the Lincoln Tunnel, Tappan Zee Bridge, NJ Transit or other mass transportation options, as significant delays are possible.
