TRAFFIC ADVISORY - GEORGE WASHINGTON BRIDGE LANES TO BE CLOSED DURING OVERNIGHT HOURS THIS WEEKEND
Date: May 19, 2006
Press Release Number: 36-2006
Several upper-level lanes in each direction of the George Washington Bridge will be closed for steel beam removal around the bridge’s New Jersey tower beginning Friday night, May 19, as part of the ongoing bridge repainting project.
Three upper-level bridge lanes in each direction will be closed from 10 p.m. Friday to 10 a.m. Saturday, and 10 p.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Sunday. Traffic in the remaining lane in each direction will be held periodically for approximately 30 minutes at a time.
Truck drivers are strongly urged to consider alternative routes to New York City such as the Lincoln Tunnel and Tappan Zee Bridge during these times. Trucks are required to use the upper level of the bridge at all times, but will encounter significant delays while this work is under way.
Automobiles are strongly urged to use the lower level. Staffed toll lanes will be available on the lower level for cash-paying automobile customers during this overnight closure. To avoid delays, New York-bound motorists should consider using the Lincoln Tunnel as an alternate route into Manhattan.
The work is weather-sensitive and may be canceled in the event of heavy rain. Customers can call the Port Authority at 1-800-221-9903 for automated information or visit our web site at www.panynj.info and click on “traffic advisory” for weekly closures.
