MEDIA ADVISORY - PORT AUTHORITY TO ACCEPT MEMORIAL QUILT ON BEHALF OF CIVILIAN COLLEAGUES LOST IN 9/11 WTC TERRORIST ATTACKS
Date: Sep 06, 2006
Press Release Number: 61-2006
A hand-crafted memorial quilt created to honor the 47 Port Authority civilian employees lost in the attacks on the World Trade Center will be presented to the agency at a ceremony on Saturday, September 9, at 10 a.m. at the Marriott Financial Center, 85 West St., Manhattan.# # #
The quilt – measuring approximately 6 feet by 6 feet – was crafted by women from states across the country working for a group known as America’s 9-11 Memorial Quilts. The organization includes more than 400 volunteers nationwide. A similar quilt was presented to the Port Authority Police in November 2002 to honor the 37 officers and commanders who died on 9/11.
The quilt includes photographs on fabric of all 47 Port Authority civilian employees lost on 9/11. The Port Authority civilians to be honored include 13 former World Trade Department employees, who were awarded Medals of Valor for their roles in helping to rescue thousands of people on September 11, 2001.
The Port Authority plans to display the quilt publicly as soon as an appropriate location is found.
