TRAFFIC ADVISORY - UPPER-LEVEL LANES OF THE GEORGE WASHINGTON BRIDGE TO BE CLOSED FOR CONSTRUCTION THIS FRIDAY NIGHT INTO SATURDAY
Date: Sep 21, 2006
Press Release Number: 72-2006
Several eastbound and westbound upper-level lanes of the George Washington Bridge will be closed for construction from 10 p.m. tomorrow until noon on Saturday.
This structural rehabilitation is being scheduled during the overnight period and weekend to minimize the impact on travelers.
Beginning at 10 p.m. Friday, one eastbound and one westbound upper-level lane will be closed. At midnight, a second westbound lane will be closed with the possibility of a second eastbound lane closure. At 8 a.m. Saturday, one westbound and one eastbound lane will remain closed. All lanes are scheduled to reopen at noon.
Truck drivers are strongly urged to consider alternative routes to New York City, such as the Lincoln Tunnel and Tappan Zee Bridge, during these times. Trucks are required to use the upper level of the bridge at all times, but will encounter significant delays.
Automobiles are strongly urged to use the lower level or consider using the Lincoln Tunnel as an alternate route into Manhattan. Staffed toll lanes will be available on the lower level for cash-paying automobile customers during this overnight closure.
The work is weather-sensitive and may be canceled in the event of heavy rain. Customers can call the Port Authority at 800 221-9903 for automated information or visit www.panynj.info and click on “traffic advisory.”
