When Newark International Airport’s new monorail link to NJ Transit and Amtrak rail service opens this fall, it will provide a fast, convenient rail connection to the airport from New York City, the Jersey Shore, Philadelphia and points in between.
Ticket prices for the new service also will be highly competitive with other types of transportation to and from the airport.

When the system opens, a traveler from Newark Penn Station will pay $6.65 for a one-way ticket to Newark Airport aboard the new rail link. That’s about half the cost of a cab to the airport.

A passenger from New York Penn Station will pay $11.15 for a one-way ticket to Newark Airport. A taxi trip from midtown Manhattan, including tip and tolls, costs about four times that amount – and takes about twice as long.

The Port Authority Board of Commissioners today approved an agreement with NJ Transit to coordinate rail service to Newark Airport, which will be called AirTrain Newark. The agreement has been approved by NJ Transit.

“This historic agreement will make Newark International Airport much more accessible for millions of travelers each year,” said Port Authority Chairman Lewis M. Eisenberg. “Even travelers who live outside the New York/New Jersey region will be able to take trains from as far away as Baltimore and Harrisburg and reach Newark Airport quickly and conveniently.”

Port Authority Executive Director Neil D. Levin said, “Today’s action by the Port Authority is another major step toward providing rail access for our airport customers across the region. AirTrain Newark, coupled with next year’s launch of the $1.9 billion AirTrain system at John F. Kennedy International Airport, will enable countless airline passengers to reach their flights without ever having to set foot in a car or bus – relieving traffic on our highways and reducing air pollution.”

New Jersey Commissioner of Transportation James W. Weinstein – who is a Port Authority Commissioner and Chairman of the NJ Transit Board of Directors – said, “AirTrain Newark greatly expands the region’s commitment to intermodalism – helping our citizens get where they need to go with seamless connections from car to train to plane and back again.”

“Our customers are looking forward to the opening of the Newark International Airport Station and the new alternatives it will provide,” said NJ Transit Executive Director Jeffrey A. Warsh. “Initially, Northeast Corridor, North Jersey Coast Line and Raritan Valley Line customers will have frequent access to the airport station and the monorail. In the future – after the opening of the Secaucus Transfer Station – customers from Ridgewood, Dover, Hackensack, Morristown, Paterson and other North Jersey locations will enjoy the same convenient trip.”

Mr. Warsh added that AirTrain Newark customers using NJ Transit trains should be aware that there will be limited seating and luggage space during commuter rush hours. If at all possible, customers are asked to travel during off-peak periods (from 9:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. and from 7 p.m. until 6 a.m. weekdays, and at all times on weekends and holidays).

Beginning this fall, selected NJ Transit trains serving the Northeast Corridor and North Jersey Coast lines to points within New Jersey and New York City will make regularly scheduled inbound and outbound stops at the new Newark International Airport Station, located between North Elizabeth Station and Newark Penn Station.

Travelers will transfer to Newark Airport’s expanded monorail system, which will provide service every three minutes during peak periods to the airport’s passenger terminals. The Newark International Airport Station will feature numerous customer amenities – including full-service check-in and baggage facilities by participating airlines, climate-controlled waiting areas, restrooms and red-jacketed customer service representatives.

NJ Transit will offer frequent service to the Newark International Airport Station:

· Generally six trains per hour – three in each direction – between 6 a.m. and 9 p.m. on weekdays.

· Generally four trains per hour – two in each direction – between 9 p.m. and midnight on weekdays.

· Generally two trains per hour – one in each direction – between 5 a.m. and 6 a.m., and between midnight and 2 a.m. on weekdays.

· Generally four trains per hour – two in each direction – on weekends and holidays.

The lowest one-way ticket prices will be $6.65 from Newark Penn Station, North Elizabeth and Elizabeth. The highest one-way ticket price along the Northeast Corridor Line will be $12.35 from Princeton Station. The highest ticket prices along the North Jersey Coast Line will be $11.95 from Belmar, Spring Lake, Manasquan, Point Pleasant Beach and Bay Head.

Riders along other NJ Transit lines will be able to connect to AirTrain Newark service by transferring at Newark Penn Station, or by riding to Newark’s Broad Street Station then connecting by bus to Newark Penn Station.

AirTrain Newark service is also accessible from Hoboken, Jersey City and Lower Manhattan via the PATH system.

Discount tickets will be available for children, senior citizens and passengers with disabilities. Money-saving monthly passes will be available for airport employees and other frequent commuters to Newark Airport.

Under the agreement approved today, NJ Transit will sell tickets that will allow passengers to pass through the Newark International Airport Station. NJ Transit and the Port Authority will share the revenues collected from rail passengers to Newark Airport. The Port Authority’s share will contribute to the operation and maintenance of the new Newark International Airport Station as well as the monorail portion of AirTrain Newark.

There will continue to be no charge for passengers who ride the monorail without leaving the airport – between terminals and to the airport’s monorail parking lots.

Also today, the Port Authority Commissioners authorized staff to enter into an agreement with Amtrak to provide rail service to the Newark International Airport Station. The Port Authority and Amtrak are currently negotiating the final terms of that agreement. Amtrak will determine ticket prices and frequency of service to Newark Airport at a later date.

The Port Authority, NJ Transit and Amtrak have joined forces to build the Newark International Airport Station and the one-mile monorail extension to the airport.

The $415 million project has been funded with Port Authority capital and proceeds from a federal program that allows airports across the country to collect a user fee of $3 from each departing passenger. AirTrain Newark is a key part of the Port Authority’s $3.8 billion public-private partnership that is rebuilding Newark Airport. Eventually, three million passengers are expected to ride AirTrain Newark to and from Newark Airport each year.
