Statement by Ernesto Butcher, Chief Operating Officer, Port Authority of NY and NJ at 5:30 pm, 9-11-01

The Port Authority airports, bridges and tunnels, bus terminals and the PATH rail transit system are fully staffed and secure. We have started to restore service at some facilities and are prepared to fully restore service upon receiving clearances from appropriate government officials and law enforcement agencies. We are continuing communication with the FBI, the FAA, Offices of Emergency Management of the States of New York and New Jersey and the City of New York and all other appropriate state and local

In addition to providing security at Port Authority facilities, the Port Authority police have deployed more than 150 officers to assist in rescue operations at the World Trade Center.

At 5:30 pm, PATH was operating both east and west bound service from 33rd Street in Manhattan to Newark and Hoboken. Trains will not stop between the 33rd Street station and Christopher Street.

Westbound lanes of the Lincoln Tunnel and westbound lanes of all Staten Island crossings were open.

All Port Authority Marine Terminals will be closed on Wednesday, September 12. All other facilities, including Port Authority airports and the Port Authority Bus Terminal remain closed. Service will resume as soon as possible.
