Trans-Manhattan Expressway Overpass Rehabilitation Project

Phase II (Replacement of Expansion Joints)

Work will start in late May 2011 and be completed by end of July 2011.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey will continue the work to replace the expansion joints on Broadway, St. Nicholas Avenue, Audubon Avenue and Amsterdam Avenue, as part of the Trans-Manhattan Expressway Overpass Rehabilitation Project.

Project Background:
Expansion joints hold the overpass together and help the roadway expand when necessary. These joints were last replaced in 1990. Joint replacement is recommended to ensure the structural integrity of the roadway.

Project Benefits:

  • Smoother riding surface
  • Reduction in preventive maintenance

Scope of Work:

  • Jackhammer roadway
  • Repair roadway
  • Remove roadway
  • Repave roadway
  • Replace Expansion Joints

Work will be completed on one street before proceeding to the next. Each street will be closed in one direction when work is in process, and cars will detour to the next street within a one-block radius. When work starts on Broadway, additional police traffic personnel will be provided to direct the traffic through the restricted construction area.

We will do our best to mitigate any noise or project related inconvenience that may arise, and ensure the least amount of traffic disruption.
