PHOTO OPPORTUNITY - CONSTRUCTION CREWS TO BEGIN INSTALLATION OF LARGEST STEEL COLUMNS TO DATE FOR ONE WORLD TRADE CENTER

Construction crews will begin to install the largest steel columns to date for One World Trade Center on Wednesday, August 12. The core of the tower is over 100-foot high, and the 24 jumbo columns will allow the initial floors of the tower to be built out. Each column weighs approximately 70 tons and each is approximately 60 foot long.

WHAT: World Trade Center construction workers begin to install the first of the largest steel columns to date for One World Trade Center.

WHERE: Viewing platform on the roof of the World Trade Center PATH Station. Media should meet at the entrance to the PATH Station at Vesey and Greenwich streets, where they will be escorted on the site.

WHEN: 7:45 a.m., August 12, 2009

WHY: The 24 jumbo perimeter columns were manufactured in the ArcelorMittal factory in Luxembourg. The steel plates were then shipped to North America and were fabricated in two separate shops - MRP in South Plainfield, N.J. and ADF in Terrebonne, Canada. The steel columns will be transported from New Jersey over the George Washington Bridge to the site.

The steel will be erected by DCM Erectors with the assistance of a 2009 440-ton Manitowoc M16000 crane, which was assembled on site this past weekend. The crane has a 118-foot boom and is more than 10 stories high.
