Port Authority Updates Its Progress at
the World Trade Center Site
Three months ago, the Port Authority unveiled a comprehensive, clear-eyed report on its vision for the new World Trade Center, the progress made to date, and the path that lies ahead.
We promised in that report that we’d have full transparency that will allow the public to hold us accountable for rebuilding progress. We didn’t promise that we’d meet every milestone every step of the way, but said we’d keep everyone informed on why we missed a deadline and what we’d do to get the work done as quickly as possible.
Today, we’re pleased that we’ve been able to meet eight of the nine interim 4th quarter milestones. We are working cooperatively with Silverstein Properties to get the ninth milestone – the excavation of the Tower 2 and Tower 4 sites – completed as quickly as possible.
- The installation of 1,600 tons of steel for the National September 11 Memorial & Museum.
- The completion of the foundation for One World Trade Center, which included the pouring of 15,000 cubic yards of the strongest concrete ever used in a New York City commercial office building, the equivalent of 60 miles of New York City sidewalks.
- The procurement of 22,000 tons of steel for the World Trade Center Transportation Hub.
In addition to construction-related issues, the Port Authority also rolled out an aggressive community outreach program during the fourth quarter of 2008, including:
- Opened a new Office of Program Logistics to communicate regularly and openly with the residents, businesses and public officials of Lower Manhattan.
- Launched this Web site to provide you with all-inclusive information on the rebuilding effort.
- Replaced the fence surrounding the construction site with a wrapping of designs depicting the current progress on the site and what it will look like when it is rebuilt.
We will continue to report quarterly on the rebuilding of the World Trade Center. Please check back for updates.
